Phase 2 Phonics

Phase 2 is the beginning of a child’s early reading journey. During this stage, children are introduced to the first letter sounds and begin learning how sounds work together to build words. Children start developing the foundations needed for reading and writing by learning to: * recognise letter sounds * blend sounds together to read words * segment words into sounds for spelling * read simple decodable words and sentences This module has been carefully designed to introduce phonics in a structured, supportive, and confidence-building way through teacher-led instruction, repetition, modelling, and guided practice. At QFE, we understand that early reading should feel secure, encouraging, and developmentally appropriate. Children are supported step-by-step so they can build confidence alongside skill and understanding. Every lesson is: * carefully sequenced * developmentally aligned * teacher-led * structured to build confidence gradually * focused on understanding, not guessing Children are guided through phonics step-by-step using repetition, modelling, blending practice, fluency activities, and carefully structured application tasks. The programme follows a consistent learning structure to reduce overwhelm and help children feel secure as they begin their reading journey. At QFE, we prioritise confidence before curriculum because children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and capable. Each week, children receive a structured workbook that directly supports the lessons taught.

Phase 3 Phonics

Phonics

Phase 3 Phonics

Phase 3 is where children begin to move from simple early reading into more secure and fluent decoding. During this stage, children learn new digraphs and trigraphs, begin reading longer words and sentences, and develop greater confidence when applying phonics independently. This module has been carefully designed to strengthen reading fluency, spelling, blending, segmenting, and early sentence writing through structured, teacher-led instruction and purposeful practice. At QFE, phonics is not taught through memorisation alone. Children are supported in understanding how sounds work, how words are built, and how reading develops step-by-step through repetition, modelling, and consistent practice. This is not a worksheet-based phonics course. Every lesson is: * carefully sequenced * developmentally aligned * teacher-led * structured to build confidence gradually * focused on understanding, not guessing Children are supported through modelling, repetition, guided practice, fluency activities, and independent application so they feel secure as they progress through new sounds and words. The programme follows a consistent learning structure to reduce overwhelm and build familiarity, allowing children to focus fully on learning the phonics content itself.

Phase 4 Phonics

Phase 4 is where children begin moving from early decoding into more fluent and confident reading. During this stage, children strengthen their understanding of consonant blends, read longer and more complex words, and develop greater fluency when applying phonics knowledge independently. Children learn to read and spell words containing adjacent consonants (blends) such as: * CCVC words (stop, clap, frog) * CVCC words (jump, tent, milk) * CCVCC words (trust, plant, crust) * CCCVC words (string, splash, scrub) As children progress through the phase, they also begin exploring: * compound words * two- and three-syllable words * increasing reading fluency * tricky words * comprehension and reading for meaning This module has been carefully designed to strengthen decoding, fluency, spelling, comprehension, and reading confidence through structured teacher-led instruction, repetition, modelling, and guided application. At QFE, we understand that children need time, structure, and consistent practice to become secure readers. Phase 4 focuses heavily on helping children move from slow sounding-out towards smoother, more automatic reading while still feeling supported and successful. Every lesson is: * carefully sequenced * developmentally aligned * teacher-led * structured to build fluency gradually * focused on understanding, not guessing * designed to strengthen confidence alongside reading skill Children are guided step-by-step through increasingly complex word structures using explicit teaching, repetition, modelling, fluency practice, reading application, and structured independent tasks. The programme follows a consistent lesson structure to reduce overwhelm and help children feel secure as they transition towards more fluent and independent reading. At QFE, we prioritise confidence before curriculum because children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and capable.
